“All Aboard”

Is this your track?

Not so sure why I have been on this train kick lately.  Maybe it’s because we see adventure and romance when we see a  train coming by.  Where has that train been and more importantly, where is it going?

Changing our lives which typically means changing careers either by choice or by circumstance is always somewhat scary to most of us.  But if we look at these changes like boarding a train, what are the possible destinations.

We all know that each journey has a beginning and an end.  How we view that journey is left totally up to us.  If we go in knowing that there will be bumps and that the rewards are not necessarily at the beginning of the journey, but that each and every leg of the trip has its own rewards.

We need to remind ourselves that not all of the answers that we are looking for will be right in front of us.  Our journey may require boarding more than one train.  But if we don’t board the trains that life offers, we may never realize our own potential nor realize our dreams.

So, when the next train comes your way, jump on board with joy and enthusiasm and savor each and every success or failure.  Take advantage of everything that the journey has to offer.  Don’t let the train pass you by.

“Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

Persist

The Little Engine That Could

I will persist until I succeed.

The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning; and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary to reach my goal.  One step at a time is not too difficult.

When each day is ended, not regarding whether it has been a success or failure, I will attempt to achieve one more {task}.  Never will I allow any day to end with a failure.  Thus will I plant the seed of tomorrow’s success and gain an insurmountable advantage over those who cease their labor at the prescribed time.

Nor will I allow yesterday’s success to lull me into complacency, for this is the great foundation of failure.

I will persist until I succeed.

In OG Mandino’s “Greatest Saleman in the World” he  tells us about the practice of testing young bulls in the Orient.  They are brought into an arena and allowed to attack a picador after he has pricked them with a lance.  Their bravery is assessed by the number of times each one demonstrates his willingness to charge in spite of the sting of the blade.

How many times are we willing to charge forth in life and business not matter how many times we are challenged?  No matter how many times we are tested.  Are we going to quit before we reach our goal?

Both OG Mandino and The Little Engine That Could are great inspirations for all of us in our quest to succeed!

Are You a Mindmapper?

Creator Adam Sicinski ~ http://blog.iqmatrix.com/mind-map-image-gallery

Do you have a hard time staying on target with your daily to-do list?  Phone, checking social media and emails can put the old to-do list on the back burner.  Strategic planning and organization can make a world of difference in your bottom line.  It seems to me that the more ideas I have, the more notebooks I have with an idea or two on each page for each project.  Now I have several notebooks piling up on my desk or on the floor and I am back to square one again with my “organization”.

Productivity experts will tell you how to get more things done in a 24 hour period.  Make to-do lists; categorize them by alphabet or number.  If these methods work for you, great.  But if you find yourself starting over every week with a new resolve for getting more done, then mindmapping may be a technique that you would like to try.

Mind maps are simple visual representations of your ideas or tasks.  You may have used them back in school when writing a paper.  (Similar to the old outline)

Today, there are many mind-mapping software programs out there.  Some are free and others can be expensive.  They all have their own advantages and disadvantages, but the one that I prefer is Freemind. It is free and uses a hierarchical composition and exports maps as images, PDFs, and text outlines.

See if Freemind is fit for you!

Happy Mindmapping!

Commitment!

Couldn’t pass up the opportunity to celebrate Balloon Ascension Day even if I am a day late.  You see for the past 20+ years I have been a hot air balloon pilot.  So the prospect of writing about my experiences was a no brainer.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself floating gently above the trees, being able to see everything around you from a different perspective.  Landscapes are perfect, different shades of green paint the picture below you, flowers are blooming, the sky is a beautiful blue and you are the center of attention.  People are mesmerized by this beautiful gentle giant of the sky.  They wave, or they follow you in order to be a part of your final destination.

Imagine being welcome where ever you decide to “drop in” and experience the delight of each child young and old.  I am privileged to be a part of this wonderful sport.  As wonderful as this all is, there is planning and an investment of money, time and effort.

What do I mean by that?  Of course, the money invested in the balloon and the accessories needed to get it off the ground.  The time invested in studying to secure the license to be able to fly and the effort a little harder sometimes than others.  Most flights happen at dawn.  So preparations begin way before dawn.

How does this relate to your business?  Close your eyes, imagine yourself floating above the pressures of starting a business, or the everyday commitment of making and keeping that business successful.  People admire you for your success and want to learn from you or follow you to victory!!

But all this comes with commitment.   A commitment to investing in time, money and yourself to get to that place.  Is it worth it?  It is not even up for debate in my eyes.  I get to relive the exhilaration and amazement of my first flight through the eyes of my passengers.  The joy that I feel is second to none.  Imagine being able to relive your successes through your clients knowing that you have played a part in that success.  What could be better????

Color Me Successful!

Ever wonder why we are attracted to colors and how they affect our moods or how retailers use colors to entice us into buying more?  Well that’s because colors stimulate our brains and nervous systems in different, but positive ways.

Red is a great motivating color.  A Japanese study found that we are more motivated to exercise – enjoy the workout more – when surrounded by red.  Why? Seeing red increases the heart rate, circulation and adrenaline.  All three inspire us to be active.

Blue inspires imagination, and thinking out-of-the-box, according to Canadian researches.  It has a relaxing influence which allows you to think more creatively.  Wear blue to instill confidence.  Think about police officers, military officers and airline pilots!  We think of people wearing blue as leaders.

Yellow is the attention grabber.  Post It notes were originally done in bright yellow.  When something is highlighted in yellow, it is more memorable to the brain.  It is also a cheerful and optimistic color that conveys joy and warmth, so wearing it attracts others to you.

Green is most associated with nature and has a calming effect on you.  If you work at a computer all day, take a break and some green in.  We associate green with good luck, wealth and nurturing and we tend to have a more positive attitude toward anyone who is wearing green.  Dutch research tells us that green makes people more open to your point of view.

Purple intensifies your intuition.  Because it combines the calmness of blue and the excitement of red, it makes you more sensitive to everything around you.   Purple is also associated with royalty.  So people who wear purple are perceived as regal and exotic and for good reason.  Long ago purple dye was rare and expensive, so only wealthy people could afford it.  Today, we still associate it with power.  Think of Mardi Gras!

Pink calms you by soothing your hypothalamus, the part of your brain responsible for emotions.  It can even reduce muscle tension.  Wear it to make you look younger.  Women in pink are perceived as younger not only because it casts a rosy glow, but also because we project positive traits to anyone associated with it.

                                                              http://allflowers1.blogspot.com/2011/09/black-flowers.html

Black is the color of authority and power.  Black not only makes you look thinner, but you will feel strong and invulnerable.  It also make some people feel more empowered.  And of course, it is stylish and timeless.

Something to think about when you are going through your closet for that important meeting!

Diligence Required for Successful Time Management

“Diligence is the mother of good fortune.”

~Benjamin Disraeli~

dil-i-gence  (n.)

  1. Earnest and persistent application to an undertaking; steady effort; assiduity.

  2. Attentive care; heedfulness

Time management in this day of surfing the internet, Facebook, Twitter are all of the distractions that can consume our time and attention.  Our resolve to be better at completing tasks can certainly go by the wayside within just a few days of that promise to do better this year.

DILIGENCE  is the word that comes to mind when trying to get through all of the distractions and staying on task, whatever that may be.

How many people truly utilitize the skill of diligence?  Very few, perhaps only a handful in a thousand.  We all believe that we that we understand the true meaning of true diligence.  Not so fast.  King Solomon relates Diligence to a trait that is as rare as a ten-carat diamond.

Why is it so rare?  Because,  true diligence runs contrary to human nature.  Our desire for instant gratification leads us to follow the path of least resistance.  Fortunately, we can CHOOSE to follow a path of greater resistance and exercise diligence in our pursuit of any endeavor, project or goal.  Investing in one’s  days, hours and minutes will bring a return on the time and effort invested.

Persistance working efficiently and effectively is a product of Diligence (a learnable skill)

Try these tips to become more diligent in reaching your goals.

Set and accomplish smaller tasks.  This helps to build confidence which makes is easier to tackle larger goals.  Be diligent by continually assessing your progress.  Don’t give up because you have not been totally successful.  STAY DILIGENT!

Identify your problems and devise ways of avoiding negative behaviors.  Correcting bad habits will build your self-confidence.  Have a buddy or a role model to help keep you focused.

Stay positive.  Negative attitudes about yourself and your abilities will always win if you allow them into your head.  Be diligent about reminding yourself of your motivations.

Remain diligent by limiting distractions.  Remove negative influences from your life.  This can include relationships or activities which may keep you from realizing your goals.

Positive outlets are a great way to reduce stress and remove doubts.  Join an exercise class, take up painting, or cooking.  Just do something that keeps you motivated.  Learn to say “no” to destructive habits.

My goal is to be diligent in pursuing my time management goals!  Let me know what strategies you are using to stay on track.

5 Tips on Getting Organized

                               Organize & Save Your Sanity

Tired of having to clear the kitchen table before preparing dinner or clearing your desk off before you can begin working?  Clutter and being surrounded by it is more than an irritation.  When you are surrounded by more things than you can manage, the visual message that you are receiving is that your life is out of control.  It becomes a vicious cycle.  Disorder breeds procrastination which perpetuates chaos, leading to stress.   Stress can lead to forgetfulness and irritation.  Organization can help to clear the clutter in your life and in your mind.

First – Clear the clutter.  Make your kitchen table and your desk a paper free zone.

  1. File it away as soon as you are done with it.  It is much easier to file away a few pieces of paper than to face a huge stack that has to be sorted before being filed away.
  2. Keep only what is important to you.  Don’t clutter your space with stuff that you may use.
  3. Write important information in your organizer as you go.  Keep everything that is important written in your planner.
  4. Always empty your in-basket every day.  (Every Day)  Make this a strict rule that you will never break.

Second – Have clear goals.

There we go again with those pesky goals.  If you don’t have specific goals, its hard to take the right steps  or identify  your priorities; nor can you hold yourself accountable.

Third – Set priorities and timelines.

When you have a deadline (ex. going on vacation)  you are more than likely  to prioritize your activities and don’t waste time on unnecessary work.  If you don’t have clear and specific deadlines you will behave as though you have an unlimited amount of time.

Fourth – Develop good habits

Because we are creatures of habit, it may take time to break old ones and develop new ones.  Don’t overwhelm yourself with trying to change too many things at once.  Focus on improving one thing at a time.  Pick one and set reminders for yourself to do it.  Reward yourself for your accomplishments!

Fifth – Stay disciplined.

Finish what you started even when you are not up to it.  Filing away all of those papers today when you don’t feel like it and clearing your desk before you leave your office is discipline.

I hope that these tips will help you with time management and help you on the road to a better and more successful business.

5 Time Management Tips

Well it’s that time of year again!  New resolutions brings on new and old challenges!  One of the most difficult for me and I would venture to say most people is time management.    I have dusted off the old notebook in order to bring some of my favorites back to life.

  • Set goals.  Yes I know, easier said than done.  But in order to effectively manage your time, you must set goals and make a concerted effort to stick to those goals.
  • Priortize your time.  What does your TO-DO list look like?  Do you attack it from top down, bottom up or easiest to most difficult?    To be most efficient, you should concentrate on the most important tasks with the highest value.  Deadlines won’t creep up on you and you won’t be caught scrambling or staying up late to get things accomplished.
  • Manage interruptions.  Priortizing is great if you can stick to your plan.  Now how do you deal with interruptions? Set up a time for returning phone calls, time for answering questions from business associates.  Remember that interruptions are a part of everyday life and can be sensibly minimized.    Use a timer in order not to devote too much time to a task that is not high priority.
  • Procrastination.     I think that it is embedded in our DNA to put things off till “later”.  Pretty soon, all of those “laters”  add up to a mountain of work that seems insurmountable.  The most important thing to do is to recognize that you do procrastinate.  Then figure out why you procrastinate.  Fear of failure, fear of success?  Whatever the reason, plan your way out of procrastination.  Get that long term TO DO list out and put a deadline on the task.  Don’t forget to pat yourself on the back for a job well done when you do get those things accomplished.  You deserve it!
  • Schedule your time.  The majority of time management comes from knowing what your goals are, prioritizing  them and keeping  to your schedule.

To a more organized and managed 2012.
